Happy Birthday (Shavuot)
We recently held a Dedication Days event on the campus of our school. It was designed to celebrate our heritage as one of the earliest Kentucky missions. Several people have asked, though, what the hooplah was all about. Hasn’t the entire campus already been given over to God? And the centennial celebration was just a few years back–wasn’t that sufficient? Questions like this amaze me. Well, maybe they don’t, given the state of the Church in general. How many of us would fail to celebrate our own birthdays? Wasn’t the first one good enough? Why do it year after year after ...
Focus
It was built by a relative of mine, a long time ago. A considerable amount of sweat and time went into moving it to its current location--atop Pine Mountain, in Kentucky. It ain't much, but it's there, and it will still keep you dry. I like that old cabin and hope to go back and spend a little time sitting and thinking there this summer. My consternation of late has been all about focus--how to determine it, get it, keep it, and use it. I'm like a kid in a candy shop, or like Newton's child playing on the seashore. ...
Organizational Prompt
The idea first developed when my wife saw a poster saying that Casting Crowns will be there. My daughter picked up on the enthusiasm, and how can you refuse to let your child be exposed to God-glorifying music? I hadn't heard of the organization, since I haven't heard of most organizations--since I'm really not an organizational sort of guy. But I checked them out as best I could, and I couldn't find any reason why not. Okay, the money is an issue, but my mentor says that "If it's God's will, it's God's bill." That sounds right to me. It ...
One small step for man…
I was thinking about Neil Armstrong's "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" quote last night, as we looked for a likely spot to watch the launch of the space shuttle Discovery. At the end, I had a much deeper realization of what Neil was talking about. We traveled to Florida over the weekend--not to watch the launch, but to visit family. It turns out that my major lesson from the mission was all about family. As I watched the brilliance of the event and turned to follow the capsule as it grew fainter and fainter ...
